Now more than ever, communities are recognizing the importance of supporting the mental health and well-being of young people. This need can be especially significant in rural communities, where teenagers may experience greater barriers to accessing mental health services. Rural adolescents have higher rates of mental health concerns than their urban counterparts (Graves et al., 2020), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2024) has identified a shortage of mental health providers in many rural communities. Challenges such as transportation, distance, and poverty can create additional barriers for students and families seeking care.
Williams Psychological Services (WPS) is working to address this gap by partnering with rural school districts throughout Central Illinois to bring psychological and therapeutic services directly into schools. Rather than expecting every student or family to overcome the barriers associated with accessing traditional mental health care, our psychologists and therapists work alongside school counselors, teachers, administrators, students, and families to provide support within the communities where students live and learn.
Our school-based clinicians provide individual psychotherapy and other mental health support to students during the school day. Working collaboratively with school personnel, we can help identify students who may benefit from additional support and address concerns such as anxiety, stress, emotional regulation, relationships, adjustment, and other social-emotional challenges that can affect students both personally and academically.
Our partnership does not end at the school doors. When students or families need services beyond what can be provided on-site, WPS can help connect them with additional resources, including ongoing psychotherapy, family services, and comprehensive psychological testing through our offices. This creates a continuum of support in which the school can serve as an accessible point of connection to broader mental health services for the entire family.
WPS also provides workshops, trainings, and psychoeducational programming for students, faculty, and staff. These services are designed not only to respond to mental health concerns, but also to strengthen the skills that contribute to healthy school communities. Topics can include developing behaviors that contribute to healthy relationships, conflict management and resolution, active listening, managing anxiety and stress, communication skills, and other areas identified in collaboration with each school.
Through these partnerships, our goal is to become an extension of the support systems already present within rural schools. By bringing psychologists and therapists into the school environment, connecting families with additional services, and equipping students and staff with practical skills, WPS seeks to increase access to high-quality mental health care while strengthening the overall well-being of the school community.
